Arthur Conan Doyle was born on 22 May 1859 in Edinburgh into a prosperous Irish family. He trained as a doctor, gaining his degree from Edinburgh University in 1881. He worked as a surgeon on a whaling boat and also as a medical officer on a steamer travelling between Liverpool and West Africa. He then settled in Portsmouth on the English south coast and divided his time between medicine and writing.Sherlock Holmes made his first appearance in A Study of Scarlet, published in 'Beeton's Christmas Annual' in 1887. Its success encouraged Conan Doyle to write more stories involving Holmes but, in 1893, Conan Doyle killed off Holmes, hoping to concentrate on more serious writing. A public outcry later made him resurrect Holmes. In addition, Conan Doyle wrote a number of other novels, including The Lost World and various non-fictional works. These included a pamphlet justifying Britain's involvement in the Boer War, for which he was knighted and histories of the Boer War and World War One, in which his son, brother and two of his nephews were killed. Conan Doyle also twice ran unsuccessfully for parliament. In later life he became very interested in spiritualism.Conan Doyle died of a heart attack on 7 July 1930.

Ich habe anhand der Penguin Edition meine Hausarbeit über Doyle's Short stories geschrieben. Die Stories sind auch von anderen Verlagen veröffentlicht, aber mein Dozent bestnad auf diese Version. Ich konnte keine Vorteile erkennen. Es gibt keine Referenzen, keine Vokabelangaben oder Ähnliches: Die Short stories sind drin und das reicht. Es handelt sich um ein Taschenbuch und man sollte die Seiten nicht mit dem Textmarker markieren, da dieser durchgeht.
I was deeply disappointed by this book. Not by it's contents but by the cover under which it was published. I purchased it under the illusion that it contained "The Improbable Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" edited by John Joseph Adams, an anthology of modern Sherlock Holmes pastiches, and not the originals of Sir Arthur. I want my bloody money back!
Zu dem Buch an sich muss man gar nicht viel sagen. Dies ist die erste Reihe Geschichten um Sherlock Holmes, die Conan Doyle verfasst hat, darunter einige der besten überhaupt wie z.B. "A Scandal in Bohemia" oder "The Speckled Band" und "The Red-Headed League".Kauft man das Buch, bekommt man bei audible das Hörbuch für nur 2,95 Euro dazu. Preiswerter kann man nicht an ein solche Sherlock Holmes Paket kommen.
I did not read this edition but as it was for free and with pictures I downloaded this to have it instead of the always-free edit. It's one of the greatest lectures of the englisch language and still in understandable englisch and very thrilling. Buy this book or load the free-edition, read it and be fascinated of Holmes genius. And theres a second book of Sherlock Holmes stories.
This collection is brilliant! The pictures throughout the stories are just an added bonus to the genius of Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. This is only a small part of the entire Sherlock Holmes saga! So, if you couldn't get enough of these stories, look for the entire Sherlock Holmes collection, also available on Amazon.
Die Geschichten von Sherlock Holmes sind unterdessen "alt". Sie spielen in einer Zeit ohne elektronische Komunikation, ohne DNA-Analysen, ohne Fingerabdrücke, etc. Sie sind - aus heutiger Sich betrachtet - manchmal etwas einfach, bieder. Trotzdem sind sie sehr reizvoll zu lesen und zu geniessen.
Eigentlich ist ja schon alles gesagt. Ich möchte nur noch auf ein kleines Ärgernis bei der Kindle Edition hinweisen, das dann auch zur Abwertung auf nur 4 Sterne geführt hat:Leider gibt es auf dem Kindle ein Problem mit dem Zeichensatz. So werden z.B. Pfund-Symbole nicht richtig angezeigt, statt dessen erscheint Zeichen-Kauderwelsch. Da die Kindle Edition ja nichts kostet, kann man das sicherlich verschmerzen. Es ist aber dennoch ärgerlich.Ansonsten für Kindle Besitzer, die Englisch sprechen, ein "must have".
